Calling All Christmas Critters!

It's the second week of Animal Antics at Jingle Belles and we'd love for you to join us. Just make a card with one or more animals having some holiday fun... like this one:

Lawn Fawn's Critters in the Arctic set is probably ten years old and yet, I still find it every bit as adorable and whimsical as the first time I saw it; I'm guessing others do too as it's still available. I love coloring or (as in this case) paper-piecing those happy arctic pals; and I'm especially happy with the floral moose! I went a little more wintery than xmas, with a neutral diecut sentiment from Elizabeth Craft Designs' Winter Wishes set (also ancient and I believe out of print) since not everyone celebrates Christmas and it's nice to have a selection of cards on hand.

JB2511: Animal Antics runs until next Wednesday evening, June 4th.

Nature's Noel: NEW Holiday Jumpstart Kit

Holiday Jumpstart: Nature's Noel is Paper Anthology's newest holiday card kit, which features Stampendous' beautiful flowers, vases and chickadees pre-stamped for you to color.

Paper Anthology’s Holiday Jumpstart Card Kit is our pre-packaged kit that includes everything you need (except coloring media and adhesive) to complete FIVE copies of this new original holiday card design. This edition is called “Nature's Noel” based on the card's beautiful florals and the coordinating sentiment.

Don’t we all adore the IDEA of making holiday cards throughout the year, instead being overloaded in November and December? But sometimes it’s hard to be inspired during the “off-season”. This pre-packaged kit features everything you need (except coloring media and adhesive) to complete five beautiful, detailed and colorful cards, including complete written instructions (not pictured, but included!) and a nice big photo for reference.

(Please note that the images in the kit were stamped with Ranger's Jet Black Archival ink, which is an alcohol-based ink formula. Thus, it's recommended to color with water-based markers or colored pencils, or BOTH! Using alcohol-ink markers like Copics or Spectrum Noir may result in the black stamped images smearing.)

This kit contains:

Five pre-stamped vases for you to color
Five pre-stamped flower clusters for you to color
Five pre-stamped chickadees for you to color
Five pre-diecut scalloped lacy patterned paper mats
Five pre-diecut green "Noel" sentiments
Complete step-by-step instruction sheet with large color photo
Coloring key listing Tombow Dual Bush Pen shades used in samples
Five grocer's kraft A2 cards

By the Numbers (week 2)

It's the second week of our "By the Numbers" challenge at Shopping Our Stash, for which we'd like to see cards that feature at least one numeral. Here's my second take on this brief:

We've just had a 21st birthday* in our family, so I broke out my Lawn Fawn Birthday Balloons and paired them with LF's Party Balloons to make a shaker card featuring some of the birthday girl's favorite things, including rainbows, flamingos, sunshine and sweets... all cut from the big box of scraps too pretty to discard!  The background paper is from Lawn Fawn's Hello Sunshine Remix and the sequins are lots of different leftovers, plus some really fun tiny strawberry sprinkles from Dress My Craft.

SOS548: By the Numbers runs until next Monday evening, June 2nd; link your cards at Shopping Our Stash!

*I'm sure glad we grown-ups are not aging at the same rate as the kiddos or else we'd be REALLY OLD by now!!! :) :) :)

Memorial Day Mandala Monday

A-PARROT-ly, it's Mandala Monday, so here's a fun little Prismacolor Pencil design in my small Dina Wakley Kraft Journal. The centerpiece is an ancient Pepin Sticker from The Ink Pad; I've pulled the colors of the sticker out into the design, and outlined everything with a Letter It Fineliner from Ranger, for a little extra polish. Happy Memorial Day to all who are celebrating; and a big giant THANK YOU to all those who have served or are serving our country.

JB2511: Animal Antics

This fortnight at Jingle Belles we'd like to see cards that feature one or more animals having some holiday fun. And yes, for the record, in the Jingle Belles world a Yeti counts as an animal. Just sayin'. As do polar bears... and here's one of those right now:

This handsome bear is the star of Sunny Studio's Holiday Hugs Stamp Set and I absolutely always smile whenever I see him. I added an Eyelet Outlet Polar Bear Brad to his mug of cocoa and used a piece of tree-festooned patterned paper as well as a few diecut mats and some stray stickers to finish off my card design.

Round up your favorite Christmas Critters and join us at Jingle Belles! JB2511: Animal Antics runs until the evening of Wednesday, June 4th.

Countdown to ICAD: 2025

The month of May is nearly over, which means that ICAD-ians are officially looking forward to June 1st, the opening day of the Index Card a Day project, 2025 version, devised and hosted by Tammy G. of Daisy Yellow Art! What is ICAD? It's sixty-one days of making art ON INDEX CARDS. And yes, we really mean the cheap, flimsy index cards that they sell at the big box store. That is quite an important feature, actually, because this event is NOT about making perfect finished pieces of art on high-quality substrates; this is about showing up, every day for two months, and making marks, trying new ideas, making lists, blending colors, test-driving new pens or inks, drawing mandalas, assembling collages, writing haikus, or perhaps a little bit of all of the above. You can read lots more about the nuts and bolts on the ICAD Home Base page at Daisy Yellow or on Instagram via the @indexcardaday feed.

You absolutely positively DO NOT NEED to make a special book or acquire any supplies except for index cards and a pen! You can keep your finished cards in a box, in a photo album, in a stack or in a notebook. I favor punching a hole in one corner of each card and keeping them all together on a book ring purchased at the stationery store. I also happen to like making little books, so in the middle of May, I tend to grab a few pieces of scrap carboard, decorate them, and call the result my ICAD book. This is the 2025 rendition.

You also don't need to buy more than one style of index cards, but since this is my fourteenth year, I have acquired a few different types and I keep them together in a little file box. In addition to lined ones (which... if the lines are messing you up... you can flip and use the back!) I especially like gridded ones and the extra sturdy divider cards. Over the years I've found colorful ones, tabbed ones, unlined ones, etc; and usually I will treat myself to one pack per year.

Until recently, I'd been keeping all of my ICAD books together in a vintage train case, but I've out grown it; so now that case has about the first ten years and I'm still debating where I'll put the later ones. But again, it's an ancillary issue that isn't impeding my joy for additional years.

Some years I make a title page; some years not. The last few years, I've written or typed Tammy's prompts onto index cards that I add into the book as I work. The prompts, like every aspect of ICAD (except working on REAL index cards!) are 100% optional. Some years I use all of them, in order, with a quasi-religious fervor; some years I use hardly any. Most years it works out to about half and half.

Occasionally I've chosen a theme or a particular skill to work on like drawing, hand lettering or collage; but generally I like to keep it loose and mix it up. There's no right or wrong. If it's your first time, I definitely applaud trying a lot of new things, it will help you figure out what your style actually IS!

Choosing whether to post your cards on a blog or on social media is obviously a personal decision, but I highly recommend doing so. Instagram is my favorite place to share (my account is @llaurenb if you want to say hi!) and I love connecting with other ICAD-ians, who are very friendly, very supportive and committed to inclusion. If you put the hashtag #dyicad2025 on your posts, other folks will interact with you in a very positive way. There are (as far as I know) NO ICAD trolls!

Some cool things I've learned in various years of ICAD: what wabi sabi is; how to draw an ogee pattern; the meaning of tessellation in pattern art; the beauty that is payne's grey; the joy of mandala art (that was a BIGGIE for me!); how much I love free-style cutting and stitching; the absolute awesomeness of inventing a font... there are far too many examples to list them but basically I do learn something VITAL every year!

Don't over-stress organizing or making the "perfect" set up; but DO try to streamline the process. I find that keeping all my blank cards and my ring-bound book together, visible, and near my "core" supplies of pens and adhesives makes it quick/easy to sit down and make a card each evening, rather than having to seek out and gather my ICAD supplies each night.

Is it "cheating" to make more than one card per day? NO!!! This is your project, and a big part of your enjoyment will come from figuring out the logistics that work for you. If you know that Sundays at your house are pretty chill; whilst Mondays are 16-hour marathons of work, errands, soccer, dance lessons and a huge homework assignment... by all means, double-up on Sundays OR feel fine about making six cards per week instead of seven. Your way is automatically right for YOU!

A final note about the sixty-one days*: Please try not to get too hung up on the exact number. Yes, this is meant to help you start or re-invigorate a daily art practice and commitment is part of that. But let's face it, we all get de-railed at times, life happens, things get busy, it's easy to fall behind and find you've missed a day or even a week. Please let me assure you, if/when this happens YOUR ICAD IS NOT "RUINED"!!! Jump back in. Make the next card. Just keep going. You don't need to catch up; you don't need to apologize. If you weren't enjoying it, or you were feeling stressed out by yet another "chore" added to your day, feel free to stop. But if you were having fun and finding it valuable JUST KEEP GOING. Here endeth the ICAD lesson! :)

*I know, I know, if you've followed me for a bit you know I write a version of the above paragraph every year and it seems repetitive. But truly, every single year, I have heard/read someone saying they "failed" because they didn't complete 61 cards by August 1st. There is literally NO WAY to "fail" at ICAD. Do what you can, when you can, and have as much fun as possible!!!

SOS548: By the Numbers

You may already have guessed from the title that this fortnight at Shopping Our Stash we'd like to see cards or projects that feature at least one numeral. Here's what I made:

I've owned my beloved Elizabeth Craft Designs Planner Essentials Filmstrip and Accessories dies for long enough that they have gone out of print and yet, I bet I've only used them half a dozen times. Not sure how that happened, but I'm using them again now. I cut the frames, tabs, insets and clips from random scraps of neutral papers, then adorned them with vellum stickers, ancient (mostly numerical!) rub-on transfers, and finally with gorgeous fish stickers that my friend Gina designed.

I'm sure you'll love a trip over to Shopping Our Stash to see what the rest of The Crew have made. SOS548: By the Numbers runs until the evening of Monday, June 2nd, so you have plenty of time to join the (numerical!) fun.

Mondrian Mandala Monday #3

Revisiting the Mondrian Mandala Monday idea for the third time... this one was a lot of fun to compose and color, though I cannot say I'm absolutely in love with the finished piece. But that's cool because the process is equally --if not more-- important than the outcome! This time I combined Mondrian's palette of primary colors and love of squares with a more traditional mandala design/grouping.

This intermittent series is inspired by Becca Sadler's very cool art journal strand, called Mondrian Monday, based on the iconic abstract works of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Dream of the Red Chamber

Shout out to my friend Liz, a lifelong teacher and scholar of both Chinese and English with whom I have shared many meals, adventures and reading lists over the course of the last thirty years or so. Knowing my love of collage and interesting vintage papers, Liz kindly shares with me Chinese texts or flashcards she has finished using. When we met up last week she gifted me an older, three-volume paperback copy of "Hong Lou Meng" (Dream of the Red Chamber) an 18th century Chinese work that is amongst the first novels ever written which still exist. Of course, I don't read Chinese, so, fascinating as the story is both IN and OF the book itself, I was more interested in the beautiful text papers, illustrations and characters, which I've mixed with pretty papers from Pearl River Mart (one of my favorite stores in NYC's Chinatown) and woven into a multi-layered collage in my art journal.

Bells and Belles

Over at Jingle Belles we're still creating holiday cards featuring Bells this week. Here's what I made:

This holiday bell sticker was the last in a pack from... ok, I confess it's so old I don't know WHERE it came from, but it was perfect to pair with this bell-themed Simple Stories journal card plus papers from Basic Grey and Authentique. There are some Eyelet Outlet Poinsettia and Holly Brads to add texture and interest; plus those golden mats are a bit shimmery in real life!

Remember, you have until 6pm EST on Wednesday (5/21) to link-up and join the fun; there's even a little prize for one lucky random cardmaker, you should probably check it out! ;)

Texture Paste plus Summer Vibe

Ranger Texture Pastes add dimension and interest to cards, journals and more. Whether you're looking for gloss, matte, opaque, transparent or crackle, you can find the perfect option for every project. Add a few drops of a Ranger Reinker to any variety and your options expand even further. Head over to the Ranger Project Tutorials Page and follow along as I use Transparent Gloss, Opaque Matte and Transparent Matte Texture Pastes on this colorful card inspired by Summer Adventures... past and future!

My childhood vacations involved my brother, sister and myself sharing the backseat of the family car (semi-harmoniously), spotting license plates from as many states as possible, and looking forward to our destination. The adorable critters in Simon Hurley's "Road Trip" Stamp Set capture that excitement and nostalgia; Ranger Texture Pastes and Archival Inks let me convey the feeling in full color!

Coincidentally these three varieties are available in a Texture Paste Sampler Pack in case you'd like to try them out before choosing full sizes!

Classic Basic Grey Tribute Mandala

It's a very simple card this Mandala Monday featuring some of my well-hoarded classic basic Grey patterned papers (from Lollipop Shop, Urban Prairie and Out of Print for those who remember BG from "back in the day"!) with the petals and circles diecut using Hero Arts' Heart and Circle Infinity Dies.

ABC's of Art Journaling

Or perhaps Art Journaling with ABC's would be a more accurate title. This double page in my Dina Wakley Ledger Journal started the same way a lot of my late night "recreational" pages do: without a plan; and featuring the supplies that were already out on my worktable.

In this case that included a bunch of bright and blend-able Distress Oxide Inks, some Dina Wakley MEdia Stencils and a little puddle of leftover White Gesso that needed to be used up before it dried out.

There's no particular focal point to this, but it feels finished to me, at the moment, anyway. I hope you'll find time this weekend to make some recreational art!

Christmas Bells, Those Christmas Bells

This fortnight at Jingle Belles we're asking you to break out your Bells for the Belles and create a card that includes some sort of bell. Here's what I made:

I got out my Impression Obsession Retro Ornaments die set (because one of the ornaments is bell-shaped) as well as my tan/gold/neutral scraps folder and had a lot of fun putting together a set of sparkly ornaments, dangling from pearl bling. And what could be a better background for a bell-themed card than a re-sized color copy of the sheet music for "Jingle Bells"?!

Be sure to check out Stephanie's beautiful Bell card at Jingle Belles, as well as the appropriately Bell-related prize that one lucky cardmaker is going to score, just for linking up with us this fortnight. JB2510: Christmas Bells, Those Christmas Bells runs until the evening of Wednesday, May 21st.

Roses in Bloom

There are few Spring sights prettier than roses, in full bloom, climbing up a trellis. If they're Eyelet Outlet Rose Brads and Yellow Rose Brads, climbing up a cardstock trellis, they are every bit as beautiful, far more mail-able, and completely non-allergenic! With extra wide Sky Washi and Brick Tape creating the background and green Leaf Brads clustered among the blooms, it's no wonder that some Mini Butterfly Brads have gathered to enjoy the scene.

Bloomin' Beautiful Shopping List

There's flora and fauna galore in the Eyelet Outlet Store; and don't forget to check the Tradeshow Schedule to see when the EO Booth will be traveling to a town near you!

SOS547: Red, Red Wine

Time for a brand new challenge at Shopping Our Stash and for "Red, Red Wine" we'd like you to use red as your primary color; OR use wine (or another beverage) as your theme; OR mix it up and do both!

As you can see, I went with option one: using red as my main color. I've got a background of paper from 49 and Market's Spectrum Gardenia collection, loaded up with layers of (mostly) red ephemera from the same collection (flowers and butterflies); from my stash of real vintage goodies (tickets and trading stamps); and from a very fun book of reproduction ephemera (various labels).

Be sure to check out the gorgeous makes from the rest of our talented crew and then start planning what you'll link up with us this fortnight. SOS547: Red, Red Wine runs until the evening of Monday, May 19th.

Scribble Sticks & Texture Paste

It's a Mixed Media Mandala Monday featuring Dina Wakley MEdia Scribble Sticks, one of Dina's fabulous Coaster Stencils and some Ranger Metallic White Texture Paste.

The awesome Dina Ledger Journal is currently out of stock, but... if you go to the product page and click the "Email Me" button, you'll be amongst the first to know when it's available again!

Bonnie Lassie

It's another cascade-style collage in my Dina Wakley MEdia Ledger Journal. The ingredients are (approximately) 1/3 actual vintage goodies; 1/3 vintage label repros from a collage ephemera book I got at a yard sale many moons ago; and 1/3 ancient rub-on transfers. I'm finding that collage is an awesome place to use up old rub-ons because it's win win: if they go on smoothly, woohoo! if they go on somewhat incompletely... still cool; sometimes even cooler like an instant distress effect!

JB2509: Week 2

It's the second week of our Ornamental Color Challenge at Jingle Belles, and here's a reminder of the palette; of which we'd like to see you use three (or more!) colors:

And here's my card:

This week, I was inspired by the inspiration photo itself, so I made an ink-blended background using Distress Oxide Inks in the shades closest (imo) to the top three colors in the palette: Uncharted Mariner, Broken China and Speckled Egg. Then I embossed the panel using Spellbinders' Forevergreen e/f and flicked some watered down Liquid Pearls (in White Opal and Gold Pearl) on top. I made a large snowflake stack to stand in for the fancy bauble in the photo and finished the whole thing with some clear gems that look a bit like the bokeh fairy lights.

Check out Stephanie's card and the little prize one lucky random cardmaker will score by linking up with us at Jingle Belles this fortnight. JB2509: Ornamental Color Challenge runs until the evening of Wednesday, May 7th.
